Carbs aren't the devil

Macros continued... Carbs have been demonized by the KETO diet culture craze CARBS ARE NOT BAD FOR YOU.  Let me repeat that.... CARBS ARE NOT BAD FOR YOU. But too many carbs and the wrong type most certainly are. Allow me to explain this  culturally misunderstood macro(nutrient). CARBOHYDRATES Yes there is a lot of media attention demonizing this macro, however instead of understanding the function of this essential nutrient and allowing yourself to enjoy them in moderation it seems to be all the rage with the celebrities and diet guru's to preach passing the bread basket AND even healthier carbs like fruit. I'm going to go ahead and give you the real deal. Yes eating a diet low in the "whites" sugar and flour is essential to your health.  BUT.... eliminating carbs altogether is a slippery slope. Here are the do's and don't of the this carb cultural phenomenon.

1. Don't eat a lot of processed carbohydrates(baked goods, pasta, pizza crust, etc.) If you do try to make sure it is in moderation.  2. Do eat a variety of of veggies especially cruciferous like brocolli and cauliflower and , leafy green veggies...yes these are CARBS 3. Don't forget to check the label for hidden sugars in a variety of processed products you would never think have sugar in them (ketchup, salad dressing, yogurt). 4. Do choose sweet potatoes, beets, and other root veggies in moderation. And do choose high fiber fruit like berries and green apples. 5. Avoid foods with high fructose corn syrup and added fructose What is too much? I recommend aiming for no more than 100 grams of carbs per day if your goal is weight loss or fat loss.  You might be thinking... "Jenn that sounds like no fun?" Let's be real. No one is going to pass the bread basket forever. I get it, I like my carbs too, but you can make portion control and moderation your mantra. Go easy on them, choose them wisely but don't avoid them altogether. Here is a great resource for unprocessed sources of carbohydrates.
