Five Fast Tips For Growing Your Fitness Business

  1. Prioritize Your Prospect And Connect Your Community

You need to have a means of staying connected to prospects and community, email is still the best tool in your toolbox and it is used more than ever.


Be sure you are collecting email addresses from everyone

  • Use a program like MailChimp or ActiveCampaign to manage your email list

  • Have an easy sign up form on your website for people to sign up for your newsletter or fitness tips

  • Whenever you are talking to someone, ask them if it is ok if you send them some fitness tips and information. When they agree, ask them to pull out their phone, go to your website and fill out the form while you are with them.

  • Create a scannable barcode or QR code that people can scan from their phone that takes them to your sign up form.


Create Great Emails And Send Them On A Consistent Schedule

  • The great thing about email programs is that it allows you to set up emails to be sent in the moment or you can create several in advance and schedule them - set it and forget it!

  • Great emails are about the person, not about you, make them feel like they can do it, empower them, make them the hero of the story in your email.

  • Work on creating powerful content - There is a simple formula that helps with the structure of writing emails it is called AIDA and stands for:

    • Attention

    • Interest

    • Desire

    • Action

Here’s how it looks for an email

Attention - That’s your headline, make it interesting, attention grabbing, curiosity arousing, grab their attention so that they want to open your email. Great resources for seeing what a good headline looks like is, or


Interest - Create some content they will find interesting. It could be a workout tip, a variation on a tried and true exercise, a diet or food tip or an unexpected way to get in a little extra fitness for the day. 


Desire - Talk about a client result that you helped them achieve. Tie it back to how you help your clients make these simple changes to their routines or lifestyle to get great results and show them how easy it is to get results they haven’t yet got by working with you.


Action - Tell them what to do next. Offer them a free consultation, workout, class, diet evaluation, or anything that gets them to pick up the phone or come in and engage with you. Whatever you do, don’t be vague, don’t say things like “call me if I can help” or “I look forward to talking to you about your fitness goals.”

  • Write to one person, just like you were talking to them. I like to remind people “broad is broke.” Talk to the person the way you would if they were standing in front of you. Talk to your ideal client, in their language. Remember, what you do to one, you do to everyone. That means if you connect deeply with one single person, everyone else like them will connect too.

  • Survey your audience every quarter - Give your people what they want. If you go to a restaurant or order fried eggs but they bring you hard boiled, you are unhappy, you didn’t get what you wanted. Your survey allows you to give your clients their fried eggs … the thing they want that makes them happy and makes them feel good about you.

People love text and they like to communicate via text as well, take a look at these stats.

Create Texts That Empower People And Results

  • Want to increase client show up rates by 80%? Send regular text reminders to your clients about their appointments - Send them more often than you think should be necessary - It’s about modifying their behavior and creating successful outcomes.

  • Text a monthly recap text congratulating them on the number of times they showed up and encourage them to beat their streak in the coming month.

  • Text them a free session to give to a friend or family member

  • Automate your reminders - Send 1 day, 1 hour, and 15 minutes before their appointment - Include a personal message, meaningful or inspiration quote - Do it, it matters and it works!

3. Monetize Your Email And Text As An Affiliate - Get More Clients With Your Own Affiliate Program

One of the easiest ways to make more money each month without doing extra work is to become an affiliate. An affiliate program allows you to make a commission on every sale from someone who clicks your link and makes a purchase and the client pays the same price they would if they went directly to the site. All you have to do is sign up and then give your special link to your subscribers in email and text. There are many popular affiliate programs you can join, here are a few of my favorites:

  • The best way to increase engagement with your affiliate links is to build a relationship with your customers and your prospects. They’ll be more interested in what you recommend if they know, like, and trust you.

  • Create your own affiliate program - Network with like minded people and business owners who are in the industry but not competitive or who benefit from their audience being healthier. Pay them a commission for people who sign up with you. You can automate the process using a program like Refersion. Or, you can simply give the person a customized link that they can give to prospective clients to sign up - Be sure to also give them a personalized discount code so that you can more easily track who sent new clients your way.

  • Make marketing easy for those people who would refer for you. I create emails that they can send, graphics they can easily copy and paste. The easier it is, the more likely they are to recommend you. Don’t forget to have them use their or Refersion link!


4. Ratchet Up Revenue With Retention

It’s much easier and more cost effective to make more from the clients you have than needing to always find new ones. Maximizing retention also gives you the opportunity to maximize revenue per client.

  • Onboard every client - Have a one on one with every client to deeply understand their goals and motivations. Document their goals and data you can use in future meetings.

  • Have follow up meetings no less than every two months - Find out if they are enjoying the program. Review results, set or adjust goals. Ask about friends and family who would benefit from your program. Make it personal, make them feel heard, connect.

  • Build personal relationships - You don’t have to be friends with every client but they should feel connected to you and you should be making an effort to know them well. When they spend time with you, learn more about them, find out what they like doing, discuss their kids or work, make the connection real.  Make your clients feel like there is nothing more important to you than spending time with them and helping them reach their goals.

  • Use a Customer Management program like MindBody to keep track of your clients and their information. Send automated emails, reminders, offers. Use it to make scheduling or scheduling changes easy.

  • Personalize your communication. If you see something they’ll be interested in, send them a text or email with the information. Snap a picture and text it to them with a little explanation about why you are sending it. Send them a personal email about their progress, unexpectedly, the little touches matter.


5. Offer White Glove Service

Having a great client experience is mandatory, be sure you are creating an experience people will not only love, but talk about, share on social, and not be able to get anywhere else!


  • When it comes to retention, the small things are the big things.

  • When they come in, have their favorite music, or playlist ready, along with a towel and bottle of water.

  • Send them a hand written note each month outlining their achievements and give them praise for their hard work and accomplishments.
